All-Ukrainian youth movement Let’s do it Ukraine with the assistance of AWO International and with the financial support of Aktion Deutschland Hilft implementing the project to eliminate the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam “Overcoming the consequences of flooding in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, helping households and social infrastructure objects” Cleaning, disinfection, pest control, restoration work, preparation for winter.”

The problem remains that the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, affected by the flood, are close to the front, which significantly affects the speed of liquidation of the consequences. A significant number of men and women are at the front, some families have lost relatives or have a person with a disability, and therefore often need physical, qualified, and material assistance.

The project will last for 10 months until September 2024. It will contribute to the restoration of the infrastructure of the affected areas and the resumption of education in educational institutions for the children in the community, provide support to the civilian population, help citizens eliminate the consequences of the flood, prepare for the winter season and return to their homes.

Staged restoration will be provided to 192 households, to which organizers, volunteers and specialized companies will help dry the premises, carry out disinfection, pest control, and some participants will even receive resources for carrying out basic liquidation work and will provide special equipment for temporary use free of charge to speed up repair works.

Also, to eliminate the consequences of the flood, a complex of disinfection and repair works will be carried out in the basements of three social facilities: schools and kindergartens in the Mykolaiv region, which will contribute to the resumption of the work of educational institutions, and the community will have shelter. The organizers will provide these shelters with heaters, thermoses, and blankets.

“The urgency of liquidating the flood remains even now because it is the health and life of our citizens. Let’s do it Ukraine implements humanitarian, social, and environmental projects in the South of Ukraine, during which we have the opportunity to communicate with civilians regularly. In the summer, the situation of the consequences of the flood was not so critical, but with the onset of autumn, people began to complain about increased moisture, dampness, and mold in the houses, as well as the appearance of mice. Some social facilities, including preschool and general secondary education institutions, have not resumed their work, as the storage facilities located in basements require specialized liquidation works. We thank our partners AWO International and Aktion Deutschland Hilft, thanks to which we can implement the project to overcome the consequences of the flood in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions,” said Julia Markhel, leader of the NGO “Let’s do it Ukraine”.

On June 6, 2023, one of the largest man-made disasters in Europe occurred – the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. According to satellite data, during the first week after the accident, polluted river waters reached the Danube River, covering more than 7,300 km2 of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. As a result, despite lowering the water level in the Dnieper, 600 km2 were flooded, 30 settlements were flooded in the Kherson region, and another 31 in the Mykolaiv region.

A huge wave of water from the Kakhov reservoir washed away everything in its path – garbage dumps, sewers, cemeteries, animal corpses, dangerous chemicals, etc. This contaminated water “stood” in the houses for several days. The water receded, and people began to return home, but they could not live there normally, because the houses were not properly dried and disinfected.
