The Let’s Do It Ukraine team visited the South as part of the project to overcome the consequences of the flood
On March 20, 2024, volunteers of the international humanitarian project “Let’s do it Ukraine SOS” showed the progress of the project to eliminate the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam “Overcoming the consequences of the flood in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, helping households and social infrastructure objects” Cleaning, disinfection, restoration work, preparation for winter” with the assistance of AWO International and with the financial support of Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

As part of the monitoring visit, there was an inspection of the restoration work carried out by Let’s Do It Ukraine in preschool and general education institutions, as well as an inspection of the operation of the dehumidifier.

The organizers met with Julia Zavadska, the deputy head of the Sniguriv city military administration, and Vasyl Khomko, the head of the Afanasiiv Starosty district, discussed the humanitarian needs of the region for further cooperation and visited households affected by the flood.

Iuliia Markhel – coordinator of the international humanitarian project Let’s Do It Ukraine SOS, eco-activist, David Stark – program coordinator of Ukraine and humanitarian actions of AWO International became important participants of the mission in the South.

“Increased humidity, indoor temperature, mold, and rodents have become great enemies for the civilian population after the eco-catastrophe in the South in 2023. Nowadays, it is very important to join forces for the prompt restoration of Ukraine. We thank our international partner AWO International for helping to overcome the consequences of the flood and for the opportunity to continue our humanitarian mission in the South of Ukraine. Geographical boundaries, preservation of resources, and the life and health of every citizen are important. We are doing everything possible so that families can return to their homes and live in sanitary and safe conditions” – Iuliia Markhel said.

From April to August 2024, it is planned to continue the project to eliminate the consequences of the flood in the Snigurivska hromada, draining the premises, disinfection, and pest control will be carried out in the affected households.

More about the project
On June 6, 2023, one of the largest man-made disasters in Europe occurred – the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. According to satellite data, during the first week after the accident, polluted river waters reached the Danube River, covering more than 7,300 km2 of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. As a result, despite the lowering of the water level in the Dnieper, 600 km2 were flooded, 30 settlements were flooded in the Kherson region, and another 31 in the Mykolaiv region.

A huge wave of water from the Kakhov reservoir washed away everything in its path – garbage dumps, sewers, cemeteries, animal corpses, dangerous chemicals, etc. This contaminated water “stood” in the houses for several days. The water receded, and people began to return home, but they could not live there normally, because the houses were not properly dried and disinfected.
The project will last until September 2024 and will contribute to the restoration of the infrastructure of the affected areas and the resumption of education in educational institutions for children of the community, provide support to the civilian population, will help citizens eliminate the consequences of the flood, prepare for the winter season and return to their homes.
192 households will receive phased restoration, to which organizers, volunteers and specialized companies will help dry the premises, carry out disinfection, pest control, and some participants will even allocate resources for carrying out basic liquidation work and will provide special equipment for temporary use free of charge to speed up repair work.
