Освіта без кордонів: як SvitloSchool відкриває можливості дітям під час війни

SvitloSchool — благодійна онлайн-школа, заснована у Великій Британії, яка об’єднує волонтерів-викладачів з усього світу: від Британії, США і Європи до Латинської Америки та Перу. Школу заснувала Юлія Косько — українка з двадцятирічним досвідом роботи в британській системі освіти. Її ідея була простою: створити безкоштовний, стабільний простір для навчання і розвитку для дітей, які опинилися у надзвичайних життєвих обставинах. За три роки SvitloSchool підтримала понад 3000 учнів з різних регіонів України та діаспори.

«Я з Харкова, і доводилося вчитися під час тривог у підвалі. SvitloSchool допомогла відчути себе не лише учнем, а й частиною великої спільноти», — розповідає Софія.

MJ Krogman, волонтер-викладач зі США, додає: «Коли почалася війна, я шукав спосіб допомогти людям, які переживають страшні часи. Я не військовий і не можу боротися зі зброєю, але я можу дати дітям знання й відчуття підтримки. Кожне заняття для мене — це можливість бути корисним, а для дітей — нагадування, що їх бачать і підтримують навіть за тисячі кілометрів. Їхня сила мене вражає і кожен урок надихає залишатися людиною у світі, який так швидко змінюється».

Табори, де діти відкривають себе по-новому

Окрім регулярних занять онлайн, SvitloSchool відкриває для дітей можливість брати участь у міжнародних таборах. Це не просто відпочинок, а активне навчальне середовище, де діти вчаться лідерству, презентують себе англійською, працюють у міжнародних командах і бачать, що їхні голоси важливі у світі.

«У таборі в Кембриджі я вперше відчула, що можу впевнено виступати англійською. Це стало of Ukraine and the diaspora.

“I’m from Kharkiv, and I had to study in a basement during air raids. SvitloSchool helped me feel not just like a student, but part of a large community,” says Sofia.

MJ Krogman, a volunteer teacher from the USA, adds:

“When the war started, I was looking for a way to help people going through terrible times. I’m not a soldier and I cannot fight with weapons, but I can give children knowledge and a sense of support. Every lesson for me is a chance to be useful, and for the children — a reminder that they are seen and supported, even from thousands of miles away. Their strength amazes me, and every class inspires me to remain human in a world that is changing so fast.”

Camps Where Children Discover Themselves in a New Way

In addition to regular online classes, SvitloSchool offers children the chance to take part in international camps. These are not just holidays, but active learning environments where children develop leadership skills, present themselves in English, work in international teams, and see that their voices matter in the world.

“At the camp in Cambridge, I felt for the first time that I could confidently speak in English. It was a turning point for me,” recalls Oleksandra from Kyiv.

Hordii from Kyiv region adds:

“At the camp, we created startups, played team games, and debated. I always thought I wasn’t good at teamwork, but it turned out — I can be a leader. It really changed how I see myself.”

Many teenagers who attend SvitloSchool camps feel stronger, explore new learning formats, apply for international educational programs, and learn to set ambitious goals and believe in themselves.

Learning That Grows Into a Community of Opportunities

Recently, SvitloSchool celebrated the graduation of one of its courses. For many children, the school has become a second family — a space for emotional rest, where they can be themselves, meet people from different countries, and feel supported. There is no sense of isolation here — even during wartime, children remain active members of a big community.

The school offers more than just English lessons. It helps children discover their talents through creative clubs, book discussions, and debates. They regularly hold themed meetups and interactive games, including the popular game “Mafia,” combining learning with fun. Older students also have the opportunity to try themselves as mentors, helping younger children by reading books in English together.

“I don’t just teach English — after finishing my main career, I found new meaning in this,” says David from the UK, who has been teaching at SvitloSchool for two years.

“I worked in top schools for many years, but after retiring I felt I could still be useful. When the war in Ukraine started, I realized I couldn’t stand aside. Here at SvitloSchool, I feel I have a real mission — to help children going through difficult times feel stronger through learning.”

For David, these lessons are more than volunteering — they’ve become an important part of daily life, a source of joy and inner fulfillment.
