The All-Ukrainian Youth Movement “Let’s do it Ukraine,” with the support of AWO International and financial assistance from Aktion Deutschland Hilft, has successfully implemented the project “Overcoming the Consequences of the Flood in Kherson and Mykolaiv Regions.” The project ran from November 2023 to October 2024 and focused on mitigating the consequences of the devastating flood caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam.
The Problem
In June 2023, over 600 km² of land, including 30 settlements in Kherson Oblast and 31 in Mykolaiv Oblast, were flooded. This catastrophe destroyed homes, inundated basements, and infrastructure, and caused significant environmental damage, including chemical contamination. Increased humidity, mold growth, and the emergence of rodents and fleas rendered many homes and social facilities uninhabitable, posing severe health risks to residents.
Key Achievements
Support for Households
- 190 households received drying, disinfection, air purification and pest control services, covering approximately 13,300 m².
- Disinfection was conducted in a 1,500 m² basement of a multi-story building in Kherson.
- 734 buckets of water were removed from walls using dehumidifiers.
- The assisted households are home to 129 children, 187 elderly residents, and 32 people with disabilities.
- Services in the basement of a multi-story building in Kherson benefited 60 current residents, with potential benefits for over 600 returning residents.
- 50 winter kits (including blankets and thermoses) were provided to families affected by the flood.
Social Infrastructure Repairs
Restoration activities in 4 social facilities in Snihurivka community were completed in stages:
- Initial steps: Disinfection and pest control of all basements in the targeted facilities.
- Subsequent efforts: Drying and identifying rooms for restoration to serve as shelters.
- Final stages: Comprehensive repairs in targeted shelters.
