150 countries cleaning up on the same day? No problem!
So far, over 16 million people in 113 countries have joined us in cleaning up illegally dumped waste. Over the next couple of years, we have an ambitious plan of engaging 150 countries for one massive World Cleanup Day in September 2018, making it the biggest positive civic action the world has seen.
We understand what a challenge this is. By the time we’re through, we will have organized the biggest international clean-up the world has ever seen, and probably the biggest positive civic action movement ever.
Our plans are already underway.
In 2016 – recruiting talented and ambitious leaders
This year, 2016, we’re focusing on recruiting passionate, motivated people around the world to become the leaders of a massive cleanup day in their native countries. It’s a challenge of a lifetime for a skilled and ambitious leader who really wants to make a difference. Read more about the type of people we are looking for here.
In 2017 – mapping the world’s waste
In 2017, we’ll start the really fun part: mapping the illegal dump sites. This is not only a great way to spend an afternoon with friends and family in the outdoors, but critical to achieving our World Cleanup Day 2018 mission.
In order to clean up waste, we first have to get a clear picture of the situation. Mapping can give us the exact location, amount, and type of garbage. This is essential to organize the logistics and the handling for cleanup days worldwide. After it’s gone, this data is great for tracking our progress, and keeping tabs on these dump sites for the future. See more information about mapping here.
In 2018 – World Cleanup Day on September 8th
Much of 2018 will be devoted to preparations and execution of the World Cleanup Day. But we will also be very focused on awareness and debate about sustainable waste solutions worldwide. After all, as much fun as the World Cleanup Day will be… we only want to do it once!
We already have staff working around the clock in preparation. But whether we truly succeed in cleaning up the entire world in one day really hinges on one thing… you.
